Badge requirements

Wearing your badge

All Fermilab employees and non-employees must prominently display their Fermilab-issued ID, temporary badge/sticker, or HSPD-12 badge on the front of the body, positioned below the neck, and above the waist.

Please remember to remove or hide badges while you are:

  • Being photographed
  • Not on official FNAL business
  • Posting on social media
  • Not conducting business at Fermilab
One swipe, one entry

Fermilab has a “one swipe, one entry” requirement, a policy to mitigate unauthorized access to facilities and security spaces where entry is controlled by badge readers. “Piggybacking” or “tailgating” into Fermilab facilities through doors controlled by access readers is not allowed.

Each individual entering a Fermilab facility or security area is required to present their badge to a control reader for verification. Any individual who does not have approved unescorted access to the space must be escorted at all times. Upon entering a stairwell and elevator in Wilson Hall, one swipe per person is required.

Badge and sticker types

There are various badge types to be aware of while onsite.

  • Employees, users/affiliates, and subcontractors are issued Fermi-ID badges. They do not require to be escorted in non-public areas.
  • Authorized guests are issued Fermi-ID badges. They are only allowed to access the area that they requested access for (i.e. daycare or housing).
  • Business visitors are issued blue temporary badges. They must be escorted in non-public areas.
  • Public visitors are issued red stickers. They must be escorted in non-public areas.

HSPD-12 badges issued to DOE employees are also acceptable forms for identification while onsite. They do not require to be escorted in non-public areas.

Additional access on badges and keys

For key and card access requests to buildings:

  1. Email card access.
  2. The Security department will seek the proper D/S/P Head/Building authority for approval & safety requirement verification.

Forgotten badge process
