Documents proving lawful status and alien registration

If you are 18 years of age or older, you “must at all times carry and have in [your] personal possession” proof of noncitizen registration in the United States. Everyone must carry a valid foreign passport. In addition to your valid foreign passport, you should carry the following documents:

Temporary Visitor (B-1/ESTA)

You must carry the most recent I-94 Document. Obtain, print, and carry the most recent I-94 document found here. A new I-94 should be obtained after each entry into the US.

Adjustment of Status Applicant; DACA; F-1

  • EAD card

H-1B; O-1; TN

You must carry the most recent I-94 Document depending on the “last event”, either approval of H-1B/O-1 petition OR entry into the US:

  • If the most recent “event” was an entry into the US from abroad – obtain, print, and carry the I-94 document found here;
  • If the most recent “event” was the filing of H-1B/O-1 petition (new or extension) – carry the I-797C Receipt Notice (either FRA or FFDG is fine):
  • If the most recent “event” was the approval of the H-1B/O-1 petition (new or extension) – carry the I-797A Approval Notice (either FRA or FFDG is fine):

J-1

You must carry the most recent I-94 Document found here AND:

  • Properly signed Form DS-2019 (with or without the Travel Authorization signature):

LPR

  • LPR Card (“green card”)

Naturalized US Citizens

While US citizens are not required to prove their status, the most conservative approach would be to also carry a US passport or passport card with you.
